How to Fix a Canoeing Joint

A joint canoes when one side burns faster than the other and leaves a strip of paper standing like the side of a canoe. It is a rolling problem, not a regulatory one. We found no rule or study on it, so everything below is common rolling practice, offered as that and not as tested fact.

Why it happens

  • Uneven packing. A loose section burns faster than a dense one, and the fast side pulls ahead.
  • Lighting one side only, so one edge gets a head start.
  • Airflow from one direction, such as a fan or a breeze, feeding one side more oxygen.
  • Uneven moisture, so part of the roll is drier than the rest.
  • Large pieces of flower in one spot instead of an even grind.

Fix one that is already burning

  • Dampen the fast side. A small dab of water or saliva on the strip that is burning too quickly slows it so the slow side can catch up.
  • Light the slow side. Hold the flame to the side that is lagging, while turning the roll, and let it catch.
  • Rotate as you go. Turn the roll between hits so the heat spreads around the tip.
  • Move out of the airflow. Take it away from a fan, vent or wind.
  • If the canoe is bad, re-rolling the remaining flower may save more than rescuing it.

Stop it with the next roll

  • Grind evenly. A consistent grind packs the same all the way along.
  • Pack firmly and evenly, from the tip to the filter or crutch, with no hollow or dense patches.
  • Roll with the same tightness along the full length.
  • Light all the way around the tip, not just one edge.

Canoeing versus tunneling

A related problem is tunneling, where the center burns faster than the paper and leaves a hollow tube. The cause is usually a loose center, so a firmer pack is the fix for both.

If a store-bought pre-roll canoes

A pre-roll can canoe for the same reasons. If it happens often with one batch, note the batch number from the label, which is what you give the store when you ask about it, and try the fixes above. See pre-rolls explained for the rest of the guide.

Short answers

What does it mean when a joint canoes?

It means one side burns faster than the other and leaves a strip of paper standing, shaped like a canoe. Uneven packing, lighting one side and airflow are the usual reasons.

How do you fix a canoeing joint?

Dab a little water or saliva on the fast side, hold the lighter to the slow side, and turn the roll as you smoke. Take it out of any air current.

How do you prevent a canoeing joint?

Grind the flower evenly, pack it firmly and evenly along the whole length, roll with the same tightness throughout, and light all the way around the tip.
