Massachusetts Weed Laws for Visitors
If you are 21 or older and visiting from another state, you can buy adult-use cannabis in Massachusetts with a valid government-issued ID, and you must use it here. The Commission says it is illegal to take it across state lines and illegal to mail it.
What visitors can do
If you are visiting from another state, you must be 21 years or older and present a valid government-issued ID to purchase cannabis or cannabis-based products from an adult-use Marijuana Establishment in Massachusetts(CCC Know the Laws).
A Marijuana Retailer shall refuse to sell Marijuana to any Consumer who is unable to produce valid proof of government-issued identification(CMR sales rule).
The Commission's pages do not list accepted ID types.
The statute allows possessing, using, purchasing, processing or manufacturing 2 ounces or less of marijuana or the equivalent amount of marijuana products as determined by the commission(session law).
Before consuming, inquire about marijuana use policies if you are staying at a hotel or other type of rental accommodation(CCC Know the Laws).
What visitors cannot do
You must enjoy your purchase in Massachusetts, since it is against the law to transport marijuana across state lines, whether by car, plane, train, boat, or any other mode of transportation(CCC Know the Laws).
The Commission says you cannot send marijuana by mail, even to states and countries where marijuana use is legal(CCC Know the Laws).
The Commission says you cannot use cannabis in any form in public places or on federal land(CCC Know the Laws).
Out-of-state residents cannot purchase medical marijuana in Massachusetts(CCC Know the Laws).
Airports and ferries
The Commission's Know the Laws page and FAQs do not name any airport, ferry or train station, so we cannot tell you from those pages what applies at a particular one. Their state-line rule names the means of travel: car, plane, train, boat or any other. We did not find a published Logan Airport or Massport cannabis rule. Federal law applies on federal land. For a specific trip, ask the carrier or the operator, and a lawyer if it matters.
Driving as a visitor
Like alcohol, it is illegal to have an open container of any form of marijuana in the passenger area of a car(CCC Know the Laws).
It is illegal to drive while under the influence of cannabis(CCC Know the Laws).
The public use and driving page has the details.
Visiting Salem or the North Shore
Our Salem visitors guide covers what a visitor to that city should know. Medical patients from another state are a separate question: the out-of-state patients page explains why a card from another state is not accepted for medical purchases here.
