A medical card can stop working for two separate reasons: the registration card from the Commission ran out, or the certification from your provider ran out. They are fixed in different places, so check which one it is first.
Find out which one ran out
From the Commission's renewal page and 935 CMR 501.140, as cited below.| What | Who issues it | Who renews it |
|---|
| Registration card | The Commission | You, in your online account |
| Certification | Your certifying provider | The provider, at a visit |
The Commission says your Program registration card expires each year on the Anniversary of your Program registration(masscannabiscontrol.com).
The Commission also sends an email reminder to the email address it has on file(masscannabiscontrol.com).
The regulation says a treatment center shall refuse to sell to a patient who does not have a valid certification in the Commission supported interoperable database(state regulation).
If the registration card date passed
The Commission says you can renew your registration up to 60 days before the expiration date(masscannabiscontrol.com).
There is no longer a fee to renew your Program registration card through the Commission(masscannabiscontrol.com).
The renewal page we read says nothing about a grace period after the date or a late fee. If your account will not let you renew, ask the Commission before you pay for a provider visit.
If the certification ran out
The Commission says the certification from your Certifying Health Care Provider must be valid (not expired)(masscannabiscontrol.com).
If your certification has expired, you must call your Certifying Health Care Provider to get re-certified prior to renewing your registration(masscannabiscontrol.com).
All fees to obtain certification are set by Certifying Health Care Providers(masscannabiscontrol.com).
The 14 day temporary card, and why it may not apply
A temporary Registration Card expires 14 days after it is issued, or when you receive an annual Registration Card, whichever occurs first(state regulation).
A patient is limited to one 14-day temporary registration during any 365-day period, unless otherwise approved by the Commission(state regulation).
No more than 2.5 ounces may be dispensed to a Qualifying Patient with a 14-day temporary registration, except that a Certifying Healthcare Provider may determine and certify a different amount(state regulation).
The Commission says Initial Access is only available for new registrations that are still being processed(masscannabiscontrol.com).
Neither source says how a patient who is past the anniversary date is handled, so ask the Commission about your case before you count on a temporary card.
After you renew
When your renewal Program registration card application is approved, you will be able to print out a temporary Program registration card(masscannabiscontrol.com).
A Registered Qualifying Patient shall carry the Registration Card at all times while in possession of medical-use Marijuana(state regulation).
What you can do today
- Look at the date on your card and write down the certification end date from your account.
- Check the email address on file, so the next reminder reaches you.
- If the certification ended, book the provider visit first. The registration renewal follows.
