Each state decides whether it will sell to a patient from another state. Massachusetts does not decide it for them. This page covers Florida, Maine and Rhode Island, using each state's own words, and the Massachusetts rule on carrying marijuana across state lines. Rules change, so confirm with the state before you travel.
Florida
The Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use says the state of Florida does not offer reciprocity(knowthefactsmmj.com).
Florida's licensed treatment centers only dispense orders to qualified Florida patients, and their caregivers, who have had an order added to the Medical Marijuana Use Registry(knowthefactsmmj.com).
A traveler must contact the other state about its laws on reciprocity, according to the Florida office(knowthefactsmmj.com).
Maine
The Maine Office of Cannabis Policy says visiting medical cannabis patients are no longer required to obtain certification from a medical provider based in Maine or to designate a registered caregiver or dispensary(maine.gov).
Maine says medical cannabis patients visiting Maine need only produce their state-issued registry identification card, certificate, or other state-issued documentation of the visiting patient's status as a medical cannabis patient in their state of residence, and that a visiting patient may only use their state-issued patient credential if their home state authorizes such use(maine.gov).
Massachusetts is on the approved states list published by Maine(maine.gov).
A visiting patient may only use their state-issued patient credential if their home state authorizes such use(maine.gov).
A qualifying visiting patient may purchase up to 2.5 ounces of a combination of medical cannabis and cannabis products every 15 days while visiting Maine(maine.gov).
A Maine dispensary may refuse medical cannabis to a visiting patient whose credentials are suspect or otherwise insufficient(maine.gov).
The list of approved states is subject to change, according to Maine(maine.gov).
Rhode Island
Cannabis Office Bulletin 2025-3, issued October 27, 2025, covers sales to out-of-state patient cardholders(ccc.ri.gov).
Under the bulletin, the out-of-state patient must have a valid medical cannabis card, or its equivalent, issued by the regulating authority for the medical cannabis program of the issuing state(ccc.ri.gov).
The patient must also possess and present a valid government-issued identification demonstrating residency in the same state that issued the medical cannabis card(ccc.ri.gov).
A passport does not display the issuing state as required by the rule, the bulletin says(ccc.ri.gov).

Carrying marijuana across state lines
The Massachusetts Commission says it is illegal to drive across state lines with any kind of medical marijuana product(masscannabiscontrol.com).
It is also against the law to transport medical marijuana on a plane, train, boat, or other mode of transportation outside of Massachusetts(masscannabiscontrol.com).
