A Massachusetts medical card registers you with the Cannabis Control Commission as a patient. Under state rules it does a few specific things, listed here with the rule behind each.

Buying

The law of Massachusetts defines medical use marijuana as marijuana or marijuana accessories sold by a medical marijuana establishment to a card holder for medical use(state law).

Under Massachusetts law, a card holder includes a registered qualifying patient and a personal caregiver who has been issued and possesses a valid registration card(state law).

A Qualifying Patient includes a Massachusetts Resident who is 18 years of age or older and has been diagnosed by a Certifying Healthcare Provider as having a Debilitating Medical Condition(state regulation).

A 60-day supply is the amount a registered qualifying patient would reasonably be expected to need over 60 calendar days, up to 10 ounces of marijuana or as otherwise defined by the commission(state law).

Taxes

The Commission says there is no state excise tax on medical marijuana sales(masscannabiscontrol.com).

The Commission says there is no standard sales tax on medical marijuana sales(masscannabiscontrol.com).

Medical marijuana sales are exempt from the local tax option, according to the Commission(masscannabiscontrol.com).

Caregivers

A registered qualifying patient may designate up to two personal caregivers(state regulation).

A personal caregiver is at least 21 years old, has registered with the commission, and is not the patient's certifying healthcare provider(state law).

Hardship cultivation

A Qualifying Patient registered with the Commission may apply for a Hardship Cultivation Registration if the patient can demonstrate that access to an MTC is limited by a listed reason, such as verified financial hardship(state regulation).

The Commission says it has not yet implemented the Hardship Cultivation Registration program(masscannabiscontrol.com).

What a card does not do

The state medical marijuana law does not require any health insurance provider, or any government agency or authority, to reimburse any person for the expenses of the medical use of marijuana(state law).
